Hold Tesla Accountable
A Call for Safety and Truth in Self-Driving Technology
On July 21, 2025, a critical protest will unfold at the Elihu M. Harris State Building in Oakland, California, starting at 9 AM. The purpose of this rally is clear: to demand that Tesla be held accountable for the catastrophic failures of its self-driving technology, which have already led to lost lives and irreparable property damage. This protest is not merely a request—it's a demand for justice and an urgent plea for responsible and transparent innovation within the automotive industry.
Tesla's Self-Driving Technology: A Dangerous Deception
The issues surrounding Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems are not new, but their urgency has reached a boiling point. Lawsuits have been accumulating, accusing Tesla of grossly overstating the capabilities of its self-driving technology, which has led to a dangerous over-reliance by drivers. Tragically, this has resulted in fatal accidents and lasting damage.
One of the most alarming recent developments occurred in Florida in 2025, when a lawsuit was filed accusing Tesla of hiding critical data after a fatal crash in 2019. In this case, the driver of a Tesla Model S, relying on Autopilot, was distracted by his phone, ran a stop sign, and collided with a parked SUV. The crash killed 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon and critically injured her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo [1][2][3]. This devastating incident is not isolated. It is part of a larger pattern in which Tesla's marketing has created a false sense of security among drivers, leading them to trust a system that is far from fully autonomous.
Further compounding this issue, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched an investigation into Tesla for misleading the public about its self-driving capabilities. The DMV found that Tesla’s public claims about Autopilot's abilities were far more exaggerated than what the company disclosed in private to regulatory bodies [6][7]. This investigation culminated in a ruling from an administrative judge in 2024, requiring Tesla to face the DMV’s accusations in a full trial. This legal setback highlights the systemic nature of Tesla's attempts to downplay the limitations of its technology and mislead consumers about its safety [4].
A Personal Reflection: The Dangers of Ignored Defects
As a person who has experienced the frustration of dealing with a defective vehicle, I can personally relate to the victims and their families affected by Tesla’s negligence. In the mid-2000s, I owned a 2005 Toyota Prius, which exhibited instances of sudden, uncontrollable acceleration—a defect that ultimately led to unsafe driving conditions. Despite raising the issue with Toyota, my concerns were dismissed, leaving me to feel both vulnerable and unheard. This feeling of powerlessness in the face of corporate denial was not unique to my experience; it echoes the stories of countless Tesla owners, who have reported malfunctions or failures in their vehicles' advanced safety features. The parallels between my experiences and those of Tesla drivers are stark and serve as a painful reminder of the importance of accountability when a company’s product, particularly one as vital as an automobile, fails to meet safety expectations.
Fatal Consequences and Regulatory Lapses
Tesla’s approach to safety has come under increasing scrutiny. A key issue is the company's failure to maintain comprehensive records of Autopilot crashes. In fact, a Tesla engineer admitted under oath that Tesla did not even keep track of Autopilot-related accidents until 2018, a full three years after the system's rollout [11]. This lack of transparency and negligence in record-keeping speaks volumes about Tesla's commitment to safety.
Furthermore, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched multiple investigations into Tesla’s driver-assistance systems, focusing on whether the company's recalls have been effective in mitigating the dangers posed by Autopilot [10][12][13]. Despite these investigations, Tesla has continued to evade serious consequences, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current regulatory oversight.
The Fight for Accountability: A Call to Action
The protest in Oakland on July 21, 2025 is not only a chance to demand justice for those who have lost their lives due to Tesla’s defective technology but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the larger issues at play. Tesla's self-driving technology is a significant advancement in the automotive industry, but it must be developed and marketed responsibly. The public deserves transparency, safety, and truth from the companies they trust with their lives.
It is crucial that regulatory bodies like the NHTSA and the California DMV enforce stricter safety standards and hold Tesla accountable for misleading advertising. This protest is a call for action—to demand that Tesla stop cutting corners in the name of innovation and prioritize the safety of its customers above all else.
We must demand that Tesla acknowledge its failures and take concrete steps to ensure that its self-driving technology is safe before it is rolled out to the public. It is not enough for the company to issue recalls or make empty promises; true accountability requires real change and a commitment to putting lives before profits.
Join Us: Stand for Justice, Stand for Safety
Join us on July 21, 2025, at the Elihu M. Harris State Building in Oakland at 9 AM. Stand with the victims, their families, and all those who have been affected by Tesla's defective self-driving technology. Let our voices be heard as we demand accountability, safety, and truth in self-driving innovation. We will not rest until Tesla is held responsible for the lives lost and the damage done.
