More Than a Show
Why the Cancellation of 'The Late Show' Is a Warning for Free Speech in America
This is not just about a TV show. The recent cancellation of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" by CBS is a chilling echo from the past and a stark warning for the future of free speech in America. While the network cites "purely a financial decision," the timing and context paint a much more sinister picture, one that every American who values their fundamental rights should be deeply concerned about.[1][2][3]
For many of us, "The Late Show" was more than just late-night entertainment. It was a nightly dose of sanity in an increasingly chaotic world, a place where humor was used to dissect power and hold the powerful accountable. Stephen Colbert, with his sharp wit and incisive commentary, became a vital voice of opposition and a source of catharsis for millions. His cancellation feels like a personal loss, but it's the larger implications that truly keep me up at night.
This isn't the first time CBS has silenced a popular, politically charged voice. In 1969, at the height of the Vietnam War, the network abruptly canceled the Emmy Award-winning "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour."[4] Their crime? Daring to satirize the Nixon administration and tackle controversial social issues.[5][6] The network's excuse then was that the brothers failed to submit an episode in time for review by censors, a claim that was widely seen as a pretext to appease the White House.[4][5] Tom and Dick Smothers resisted censorship and, as a result, their show was axed. They later sued CBS for breach of contract and won, but the damage to their careers and the chilling message sent to the rest of the industry was done.[4][6]
History, it seems, is repeating itself, but with an even more brazen disregard for public perception.
The cancellation of "The Late Show" comes just days after Colbert eviscerated his own parent company, Paramount, for its $16 million settlement with Donald Trump over a "60 Minutes" interview with Kamala Harris.[7][8][9] Colbert, in his unapologetic style, called the settlement a "big fat bribe" intended to curry favor with the Trump administration, which holds the key to approving Paramount's pending multi-billion dollar merger with Skydance Media.[7][8][9][10]
Let that sink in. A major media corporation, in the midst of a deal that requires government approval, pays a sitting president millions of dollars to settle a lawsuit that many legal experts deemed frivolous.[11][12] And when their highest-rated late-night host calls them out on it, his show, a bastion of the very free speech they claim to champion, is unceremoniously dumped.[1][13] CBS and Paramount insist the decision is purely financial, pointing to declining ad revenue in the late-night landscape.[1][2] Yet, "The Late Show" has been the number one late-night show for nine consecutive seasons.[3]
The narrative that this is merely a business decision falls apart under the weight of the facts. Skydance Media, the company set to merge with Paramount, has already pledged to eliminate all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs at Paramount and install an ombudsman at CBS News to address complaints of bias.[14][15] This move is a clear concession to a political agenda that has long targeted what it deems as "liberal media." Furthermore, there are reports of a secret side deal where Skydance would provide an additional $15 to $20 million in public service announcements and other content promoting conservative causes.[12][16][17]
This is not just about one show or one host. It is part of a broader, more insidious pattern of behavior by Donald Trump to control and censor the media. Throughout his time in the public eye, he has relentlessly attacked journalists, calling them the "enemy of the people," and has repeatedly threatened to use the power of the government to punish news organizations that are critical of him.[18][19] He has called for jailing journalists, revoking broadcast licenses, and has actively worked to undermine the credibility of any news source that doesn't parrot his narrative.[19][20]
The cancellation of "The Late Show" is a victory for this strategy of intimidation and a devastating blow to the First Amendment. It sends a clear message to every journalist, every comedian, every artist: criticize the administration at your own peril. This is how free speech erodes—not with a bang, but with a series of quiet, "purely financial" decisions that chip away at our ability to speak truth to power.
This is why this cancellation concerns me not just as a fan, but as an American. I am watching our fundamental rights being traded away for corporate mergers and political favors. The vibrant, chaotic, and often messy discourse that is the lifeblood of a healthy democracy is being systematically stifled.
We cannot let this happen in silence.
This is a moment to stand up and make our voices heard. This is why I am urging you to join a protest at CBS Television City in Los Angeles on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at 12:00 PM. We will gather to demand transparency from CBS and Paramount and to send a clear message that we will not stand by as our freedom of speech and the press are dismantled. This is not just about saving a television show; it's about safeguarding the very principles upon which this nation was founded. History has shown us the consequences of complacency. Let's not repeat its mistakes.
